Are Your Goals Really Yours?

Did you ever think that perhaps the reason you haven’t either maintained your New Year’s Resolutions or achieved your goals might be because they are NOT really YOUR goals?

This is a common reason for “failure” or “falling off the wagon” of your goals.

The goals you have made in the past may actually be those implanted in your brain by your parents, your siblings, your peers, your teachers, your spiritual leaders or even society as a whole.

To me that’s been a particularly important insight.

If you read my post on my 2010 weight loss journey you’ll see that once it really became my goal (when my heart was affected and I couldn’t do the things I used to be able to do), the goal became a part of me and a part of my soul. I accomplished everything I needed to get done in a very short amount of time whereas before I would find many reasons I couldn’t do this or couldn’t do that. I believe that before my heart was affected I did want to lose weight because I was miserable but I didn’t really ‘own’ it.

I had been told all my life that I was fat and needed to lose weight – this started with my mother and continued with the Navy and then with other doctors. The part of me that had wanted to lose weight was doing it because of society’s rules and my parent’s opinions.

This year it became my own desire. And I took the means to achieve it.

Look at some of your past goals and see if this is true of them. Check out GoalSetting4You

Then take some time and figure out what YOU want. Once you figure that out, it will be so much easier to achieve your goals.
