you manifest what you believe not what you want

“You manifest what you believe, not what you want” ~ Sonia Ricotti

Read this simple quote several times and let the meaning sink in.

This is often why people say that ‘positive thinking’ doesn’t work.  And it’s also why affirmations by themselves may not be as effective as we’d like.  It’s another reason why much of the time even if you do everything you’re supposed to, it still doesn’t seem that you can manifest what you want – and then we get impatient and simply “quit”, saying “see I told you it doesn’t work”.

The hardest (but most rewarding) work you can do along these lines is to really examine your beliefs. Usually you can figure out the limiting beliefs by identifying the “buts”….for example if you say “I am becoming a millionaire” – listen quietly to your inner voice and hear the “but” that follows that statement. It goes something like this:

Your voice: “I am becoming a millionaire”

You mind: “but there is no way that can happen given my current income and my age. I’ll be dead before I could possibly make that kind of money. Besides I have a day job and don’t have time to work hard enough to make that much money and even what if I decided I wanted to try for it, I would have no more freedom and I’d have such increased responsibilities that I wouldn’t know how to juggle them with my family and my day job…..”

Do you see how many limiting beliefs are uncovered in the short time it took me to jot it down. And I didn’t even give it any thought. These are just things that I have heard come out of people’s mouths when I ask them about their beliefs and desires. You can also see that becoming a millionaire, in addition to being a trigger, is probably not something that person really wants deep inside. This person doesn’t want to work any extra or have anything add responsibilities to their already full day, or that might interfere with their relationships (family, job, etc).  They aren’t even willing to entertain that there are many ways to become a millionaire and that this process does NOT necessarily require extra work or taking you away from your family. But these are good reasons (aka excuses) as to why they won’t even make the effort. This person will say the affirmation but without looking at the “but”, they won’t understand why it won’t come true.

Examine your ‘buts’ and write them down. Keep going too. I could have just stopped with the “given my income and age” but there was more in this person’s belief as to why they couldn’t become a millionaire so we had to let it just flow. Do that with yourself. You will discover many of your beliefs. Once they have been uncovered, you can work on changing the ones you want to and then your desires can be in concert with your new beliefs.

Remember, though, that beliefs may have multiple layers.  So, don’t just stop with one “but” session. Do this repeatedly especially after you’ve identified one or more limiting beliefs in response to a sentence. Then go back and do it again and you’ll most likely realize there are more. It’s that wonderful “onion peeling process” at work. Use it to its full advantage. This part isn’t hard. It may be a bit painful when you see what’s been holding you back (maybe you still think the earth is flat – not really but sometimes your old beliefs are old and new facts have refuted them by now but that message has not made it deep within your subconscious mind). But it definitely will be worth it!

Tuesdays With Terrie

tuesdays-with-terrie-cropped“What’s up Doc?” might be a better lead in for this week’s episode.

I’m two days away from the operating room.

Needless to say I’m worried. I have never used my favorite saying so much in my life. “Everything always works out for me” – over and over again.

I’ve also been using my favorite technique for reducing anxiety and fear – EFT (emotional freedom technique). Fortunately I worked with an EFT practitioner weekly for about 2-3 years so I know what to do and where to go with this. However, I’ve also made an appointment with another EFT practitioner I really respect to fine tune my tapping since when you’re in the middle of things, you can miss some key points. That’s my belief about coaching and an EFT practitioner is a coach.

A Coach helps you get where you need to go but you do the work and you provide the direction.

This past 2 weeks have been a whirlwind of thoughts, emotions and activity. I’ve had to prioritize my life and if others can’t deal with my decisions I just have hoped they would understand and get over it.

Just what I needed at work yesterday – someone got their feelings hurt because I told them to get out of my chair. Really? And I’m upset with myself for letting it bother me that that person is upset with me. Shows me that I really don’t have all my priorities straight.

“Everything always works out for me” – over and over again and again…ha ha. I can tease but it really is true and saying that and “Nothing and no one can interfere with my health and well-being, not even myself”. This is another important phrase in my vocabulary right now.

Remember that I’m a physician and I know what can go wrong. If I were to focus on those things, what would happen? I’d most likely attract that into my life and I surely don’t want that. So, I use these two statements to get my mind back on a better and higher plane and increase  my vibrations so that I set up the best possible environment and situation for myself.

Hopefully I’ll be out of the hospital in time to provide next week’s update. Take care for now.

Positive Thinking Doesn’t Work……By Itself

picking_your_brainWhat you are vibrating is often different from what you’re saying or “thinking”. You can say all the positive things you want, affirmations in every sentence…but unless you’ve cleared the land (gotten rid of all the negative stuff in your belief system), the affirmations’ effect will be minimal or if you see a result then it most likely will be temporary.

Your vibrations are based on your feelings. Although affirmations and positive thinking can give you a temporarily improved feeling so that you think you’re doing everything correctly, reality is that you still have that underlying anxiety about the lack in your life. Why is that still there? Because you didn’t identify your limiting beliefs and then work to clear them out, replacing them with new beliefs.

Every time you say an affirmation such as “I am prosperous and wealthy”, your soul feels the contradiction between the words and the feeling “I don’t deserve to be prosperous” or “all prosperous people are greedy”  or “money is the root of all evil” etc. When there are these contradictory thoughts and feelings inside of you, your vibrations bounce back and forth like a ping pong ball. Nothing can come from that except more confusion and sensation of lack. You feel confused and clumsy and when saying the affirmations (or doing other types of positive thinking), you feel worse than before but you can’t identify the reason. You’re still stuck in the lack belief/vibration and that’s what rules your results.

This is why so many people say that positive thinking or the Law of Attraction “doesn’t work”.

It will work but not by itself. You have to obey the other Universal laws and work on getting rid of your limiting beliefs.

Can you think of any situations where this has occurred in your life? Let us know by putting it in the comment box.

Become A Wordsmith

hook_carrying_construction_plate_text_10894How many times have I talked to you about choosing your words wisely? Many times I know.

Why do you think that is?  Probably because words are your power! Words are also reflections of your thoughts and lead to other thoughts generated by the words you’ve just been using. And all of this leads to feelings. It is your FEELINGS that determine what you attract.

When people hear that their words are powerful, they think that just saying affirmations should bring them what they want. Affirmations do work but there are multiple aspects to this work. You have to carefully word your affirmation correctly. You have to make it believable (just like your goals) and most importantly you have to be able to accept it and divert your thoughts and feelings from the negative thoughts you’re having. Those negative thoughts will derail the effectiveness of the affirmation.

When you’ve written the affirmation or even just a statement of your goal, it should be in present tense, not have any double meaning words (such as bills – that could mean the invoices you receive every month or the cash you carry in your wallet). There shouldn’t be any trigger words for you either.  I can’t think of a specific example right now but I know that there are “positive” words that set some people off and will lead them down the wrong path toward a different momentum than they want.

Start by writing down the words that mean good things to you, that feel good and are words you want others to use to describe you or your life. For some people “epic” is a wonderful word. For me, for instance, I would never use it because I think it’s overused and I don’t like it. This is why you need your own list and your own words.

When “But” Is a Good Thing

butMost of the time we think that “but” is a 4 letter word (minus one). It can follow something good and end with something not so good – “you did a great job, Joe….but next time why don’t you do this or that”.  That kind of “but” negates everything that went before it. I bet that you cringed when you even read  the word “but”. Fess up – to yourself anyway.

We often wait for the “but” to drop so to speak. We are so conditioned that someone is going to tell us what we did wrong that we don’t even hear the compliment because we’re waiting for the ‘but’.

But  (sorry, couldn’t resist) today I want to tell you that there is a “but” that is a good thing. In order to use it effectively you have to listen all the way through. Listen to yourself that is. “But” is the easiest way for you to determine your limiting beliefs. I find it hard for folks to realize they have any limiting beliefs because such thoughts are so engrained in them that they don’t even realize they are beliefs. To them these thoughts are “Truth”, no question, no doubt. Remember, though, that a belief is just a thought you keep thinking over and over again. So how on earth can you identify that they are limiting beliefs? By using the power of “but”.

You’ve probably heard the naysayers out there who claim that affirmations are useless and they don’t help you achieve your goals. In some ways these people are correct. You have to clear the land before you can start to build again. The affirmation is the building. There are many ways to clear the land. There are denials, there is EFT, there are many different techniques for clearing your mind and presenting fertile ground for the affirmations to take hold.

Today, though, I want to show you how to use the affirmations to identify your limiting beliefs.

First, make a list of what you want. For example, “I have increased my income by 50% in the past six months”.

Say the affirmation out loud.

Pause at the end of the statement. Is there a “but” (or a “yeah but”)? If so, what follows the but? That is your limiting belief.

Write down all the statements/thoughts following the “but”.
