Sabotage!

stick_figure_carry_text_11312Take some time to look at your life – it can be a small chunk like the last month or six months or you can look at a much bigger portion. This is going to require you to be honest with yourself. You don’t have to tell these things to anyone else but you really do need to examine your motives and results very closely in order to get anything out of your work.

Once you’ve picked a section of time, you want to look at actions you took and then at the results that came from those actions. Although it’s good to look at the wonderful things that have happened so that you can repeat them, just write them down for now and put them aside. You can use them to compare later.

Select the things that didn’t go exactly the way you wanted them to go. Now, look at these events/occurrences and see if you can identify any thoughts that contributed to their development. I’ve used this example before but it’s the most vivid one I can think of. When I was one week away from starting my 2nd 100 mile race in 6 weeks, I started to worry about the heat and the sun and how on earth I was going to be able to endure all that for the long hours I was going to have to be out there – it was pretty wide open so the sun was going to beat down the entire time. I kept thinking that maybe I should pull out and just be happy with the race I had just completed. These thoughts were consuming me. Then low and behold on Wed (before the Friday start day), I suddenly developed severe low back pain to the point that I could not walk. It came on while I was sitting down teaching a class so there wasn’t anything specific I did. I was able to make an appointment with my AIRROSTI provider and she saw me that day. On my way to the appointment I realized what I had done. I had created this back pain to keep me from having to start the race. After all, it’s “socially acceptable” to drop out because you’re injured, right? However, by then I had also realized I really did want to participate in this event and was very psyched up for it. That was fortunate because between that desire and the work of my provider, I was able to make it to the start line just two days later AND complete it. The point to all of this is that I had sabotaged myself almost into not being able to start – all by my thoughts!

And last year I let all the doubts about my abilities once again lead to low back pain 2 weeks before my attempt to run across Tennessee. It was my fears and questions (instead of just trusting in the Universe to take care of me as It always does) that set me up for injury. I am pretty powerful in using the Law of Attraction and you would think that would make me more cognizant of what I am thinking.

This year, the same has almost happened with different problems – first it was the surgery and convalescence and then a different kind of back pain recently  that has been very debilitating.  What brought that on? My indecisiveness and fears of looking stupid to all the other runners.  What if this, what if that? How stupid of me. People already know that I’m slow and old but I’m out there and so what if I don’t finish? Will the world end? Of course not. So why sabotage myself and end up in such pain because of my dumb emotions.

When I realize I’ve done all these things I can plan future events (whether running or otherwise) in a much different mindset. Often we only plan the physical steps to accomplishing what we want. We forget to go into the deeper aspects which are as important (and often more important) – deal with and plan our emotional responses and feelings to anything that could possibly develop as we get ready to embark on a project. Do you make this a part of your planning procedure? Do you take your feelings and emotions into consideration when doing goal setting and plans for goal achieving? You should. We all should. That is what will really lead to our success. All the other techniques we learn are essential for sure. But we also have to put out potential (and desired) emotional responses into every step of the planning procedure.

Finish your list and see if you can determine where you’ve sabotaged yourself. Now, figure out how you’re going to prevent that from happening again. Awareness is key! And now you’re aware.

Complaining & Criticizing Is Making You Sick & Unhappy…And It’s Holding You Back

stop complainingI think this is one of the most important points I’ve made in a very long time. Whenever you are complaining or criticizing, you’re putting out negative vibrations and thoughts into the Universe. And even if they are thoughts about someone else or some other situation, the Universe only knows that they are emanating from you! Therefore the Universe simply thinks you want more of that negativity to come into your life.

What good does complaining and criticizing do anyway? Does it accomplish complaininganything? No, of course not. It’s different that stating an issue and presenting a solution if there’s one warranted. If there isn’t a solution needed, then there really isn’t a problem is there? And there’s nothing to complain about. Perhaps it’s something that you’re not overly happy about – let’s say a change requested by your new boss. If there’s no solution you can see, then stop and ask yourself what’s really bothering you. Is it, perhaps, that you just don’t like change and that’s why you’re not happy? Is it that you didn’t think of it and that’s why you’re not happy? Is it because you’ll have to start doing things differently and you are happy and content in your current comfort zone? What really is going on in your mind and your heart? That is what you have to investigate no matter how deep you have to dig. Go within, not without. Complaining and criticizing is going “without”. Whereas the introspection to figure out what is going on inside of you is going “within”. That is growth and will help you learn what is going on inside of you and what to do about it. It may be (but probably isn’t) that there really is a problem and with this in depth look, you’ll come up with a solution. However, it is more likely that you’ll find out more about yourself and then be able to improve your outlook and attract more positive things into your life.

Constant codont complainmplaining and criticizing also will make you sick because of all the negative energy surrounding you. Negative thoughts and feelings put you in a low level stress response and the excess cortisol that you’re constantly producing in that state will eventually lead to chronic fatigue and lower your immunity. You really can make yourself sick in so many ways. Do you ever say things like “I’m sick and tired” or “I’m fed up” or even worse “This is killing me” or “you make me sick”. These are all affirmations to the Universe to bring you more of what you’re talking about – the Universe does NOT know that these are just expressions.

Unless you turn within and investigate what is making you feel these negative vibrations, you will never grow and progress. The complaining and criticizing will hold you back. It’s just further validation of your limiting beliefs. You never have the chance to explore what those beliefs are and why you have them and more importantly, how to clear tholding_back_competitors_400_clr_11096hem and figure out what you really want to believe. That is the only way you’ll grow and progress. So, if you feel you’re being held back, realize that you are not being held back by anyone or anything. It’s you who are holding yourself back.  You really are and can be in control of your progress and growth. Stop blaming anyone or anything but yourself. What happened in the past is in the past. The present and the future is totally up to you. You can continue to try to blame external sources but that won’t get you anywhere. The Universal Laws operate within you. You really do have control of your life. Of course, with that awareness comes the responsibility to take things into your own hands. Often that is a great burden but it also brings tremendous freedom! Once you know that you can change things, you can bring whatever you want into your life, you feel lighter and happier. And you realize that you have the ability to grow and nurture yourself to a degree you’ve never had before.

Keep track of how often you complain or criticize others. Figure out something to do to change your thoughts and behavior when you find yourself doing that. For example, just say something like “that person is doing the best he can with what he has” or “I’m sure that he has reasons for behaving that way and I just don’t know what they are”. Practice that on easy things like when you start to criticize other drivers or other parents or someone at a grocery store or event. Simple things that really are unimportant. Once you start practicing on those, you’ll find it easier to change the way you think about the more important things in your life.

Let us know what you think about this and if you can see any pattern in your life that has followed this sequence. I know I can.

Momentum Monday

“What separates people that get what they want out of life from those people who do not get what they want out of life is their response to challenges.”
Dr. Steven G. Jones

Although I don’t believe this is the only thing that separates these two groups of people, it’s an extremely important point.

Think about yourself and how you respond to a challenge. Do you crawl up in a ball and want to die? Sometimes that’s ok initially. What’s not productive is when that behavior or thought process continues on and on and on. Do you get mad and decide that this is not going to beat you? That you’ll find a way to conquer the challenge, to climb up and over whatever obstacle is in your way? That is the way of the warrior, the person who excels at life.

Remember that there are two different vibrations at play when you are confronted with a problem. There is the vibration of the problem and if you continue to think about the “problem”, you will stay on that lower vibration and not move anywhere – you are focusing on the problem so that is what you’ll get more of. Maybe the problem won’t get worse but it won’t get any better either when your vibration remains on the problem.

You have to raise your vibration to the level of the solution – a much higher vibration. Instead of thinking about and focusing on the problem, concentrate on the solution. Tell the Universe you are ready to receive the answer and you know that it’s out there waiting to be delivered to you.

Think back to your past and think about when you’ve discovered a solution to something – what have you felt like when you’ve been in the process? Maybe take a look at a time at work when a problem has been identified. Everyone might respond with “oh nuts, what do we do now?” But then you all got your heads together and brainstormed until you figured it out. What kind of elation did you all feel? Use that as  “Kodak Moment” to elevate your vibration when you’re after a solution to your current problem.

I don’t even use the word problem once I’ve identified what it is. I think about how great it’s going to be when I come up with the solution to x, y, z – describing the situation if I must. Or preferably I use something that’s brief but objectively describes the situation. Then I go right back to looking for the solutions – opening my heart and mind to the Universe to deliver the answer to me.  I use some of the processes we’ve talked about – the 68 second process, rampage of appreciation and even the “wouldn’t it be nice if….”.  If you’re skeptical or it’s the first time, you can use “I’m in the process of….”

Next time you come across a challenge, immediately switch to the solution seeking mode and your vibration will automatically elevate with you! Try it, you’ll like it. Don’t dwell on the problem.  Move out and move up!
