Then again, given this year’s winter, you may NOT have gotten to it yet.

Regardless, it’s like making a new beginning. We can always do spring cleaning – no matter the time of year. Just calling it spring cleaning makes you feel young again too.

So, why am I talking about cleaning here? Because there are at least two types of cleaning – external and internal.

External is as important sometimes as internal. You have to have a clean external environment in order to allow your energy to flow freely. Sometimes, though, this is a formidable task. What then? If that’s the case, then start small. Dedicate (and commit to) 5 minutes a day to unclutter some area of your home or office. You can certainly do 5 minutes without getting overwhelmed…and it’s hard to say that you just don’t have even 5 minutes to spare. Look at it as if it’s an appointment because it needs to be something you’re set on achieving. I think you’ll be surprised to see that once you get into it, you’ll go even longer than 5 minutes – maybe only 10 or you may stick to the 5 minutes but if you stick to that, you will have accomplished a goal! How cool is that?

Pick out the area that bothers you the most and go to work on that. Set a goal for that area – be able to walk through without tripping, be able to find your notes easily, open your bills and file them so that doing your taxes will be easier etc. You know what it is you want to be able to do. Put it down on a piece of paper or better yet, on your calendar every day or every other day. Then it’s become an appointment. Once you have your external environment clean and empty (or even organized), you will have allowed the Universe to make readily available the things you have asked for in Step 1 (Ask and it is given).

But what about the internal cleaning we have to do. There are so many emotions we just store up and never do anything useful with. In fact, they are like the physical clutter in our environment and they prevent the movement of the good emotions and thoughts we wish to have in our lives. If you are filled with anger and resentment, how can you experience the joy and happiness you wish for? You can’t because there is no room for those emotions to float around and bathe your soul.

How do you do the spring cleaning of your mind?

1. Make a list – free flow – of the emotions that are rummaging around in your mind right now. Just let it roll. Are you experiencing fear? Are you worried about a bunch of things? Are you angry at your friends or coworkers for something? Do you have resentment for not getting a better job or a raise or a position you’re after? Are you angry at an ex whom you feel treated you poorly? I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Write down all emotions that come to your mind.

2. Take that list and write next to each feeling the emotion you want to replace it with. If you’re unhappy write happiness or joy. If you’re resentful about something, write what you wish to feel – is it peaceful? Is it contentment? Write down whatever it is you really want to feel.

3. Once you have the list of the emotions you want to experience, try holding thoughts about that emotion for 17 seconds (leading to the 68 second process). Once the 17 seconds has become comfortable move on to either the 68 second process or the “wouldn’t it be nice if” process.

4. Talk out loud for 68 seconds about how you will feel with these emotions being prominent. Something like “I feel so peaceful and relaxed. I am happy and content. I have so many positive emotions inside my emotional bank that I am overflowing with joy……” and just keep going on for 68 seconds.

5. If this is hard to imagine, try the “wouldn’t it be nice if….” where you substitute what you desire after the “wouldn’t it be nice if..” – that makes it a bit easier for the subconscious to believe and respond to.

6. In a few days or a week, try the whole process again. Write down the emotions you are now experiencing. See what’s changed. Hopefully you’ve done the uncluttering in your physical space as well as in your mind and you’ll see the difference.

I think that when we watch that show, it’s for one of a couple of reasons:

To reinforce that we actually are “normal” and we don’t do things like that,

To see if the junk we have around us would constitute hoarding to the professionals, and make us feel better if ours is not messy,

Just to see how others live – “How could they possibly live like that?” (isn’t this part of the basis for all reality TV shows?)

I’m sure there are many other reasons for watching the show. Some people just want to see people who are messed up in life. I think it makes them feel their lot in life is better than those they are watching and it’s important (unfortunately) that we feel better than someone else – it feeds our self-worth even though it shouldn’t.

But I digress (what else is new).

It’s easy to spot hoarding when it comes to physical items – you can see them. But I would bet that most of you who are reading this are “emotional hoarders”. I can hear you muttering to yourself right now “what the heck are you talking about Terrie?”

Right this minute I ask you to take a few seconds (or it may take you a bit longer) and look around you. What emotions come up when you look at certain things, people, places? What memories do you have right now? What emotions are associated with these memories.

Here’s the Mayo Clinic definition of “hoarding”:

Hoarding is the excessive collection of items, along with the inability to discard them. Hoarding often creates such cramped living conditions that homes may be filled to capacity, with only narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter.

They also go on to say:

People who hoard often don’t see it as a problem, making treatment challenging.

Emotional hoarding involves the excessive collection of emotions but more importantly the second part of the above definition applies here – “The inability to DISCARD them”. With emotional hoarding your minds become filled to capacity with only narrow pathways through the clutter of your mind. Some people continue to amass their emotions to the point where there is absolutely no movement through the clutter.

Even more with emotional hoarding is the problem of people not seeing that they have a problem. I bet your first response was “no way, you’re full of it Terrie.” But if you’re honest with yourself and examine how much anger, resentment, hurt, bad feelings, jealousy, envy, bitterness, greed, negativity etc are cluttering up your mind, you’ll begin to see at least some of the problem.

This is one reason we put so much emphasis on clearing, whether you use denials, Hoʻoponopono, the Sedona method, EFT or any other clearing method. Identifying and clearing are so vital not only for getting rid of your limiting beliefs but also getting rid of these useless emotions. They really are useless – what good do they serve you?

Resentment is one of the most damaging (physically speaking) emotions there is. Resentment is usually deep seated and when you don’t release it, it can cause a myriad of complaints and problems, including cancer. What happens when you harbor resentment? It eats at you, right? Well, what do you think cancer does? Look at people you know who have had cancer and see if you can spot any resentment in their lives. If you can’t, then ask how well you know them.

We’ll look at this issue more in the upcoming months but I wanted you to start 2014 looking at yourself and the emotions that are swirling around inside of you, taking up space that keeps you from being happy.

You have to examine the clutter in your life. Once you look at the clutter you need to create a vacuum. As you are creating the vacuum, you are also giving to others and have the potential to continually express your gratitude – one of the most powerful forces in the Universe. Let’s look at these factors.

If you have clutter in your life, how do you think the Universe will be able to bring you what you’re asking for? There isn’t room for it in your life. This can be physically or mentally but usually the physical is simply a reflection of the mental aspects. For example, if you want a new car take a look at your garage. Do you have it filled with cars or with junk even. If you have a two car garage and two cars, the Universe doesn’t see room in the garage for a new car. If you really need another car, you’re going to have to be putting one of the cars in the street or driveway so start parking whichever one it will be there now. Leave one side of the garage empty so that the Universe will see that you really mean it when you say you want one and that you’ve created space for it. You have to clear things out to make room for your new good to come in.

As you’re cleaning out – whether your closet or your garage or other parts of your home – give away your old stuff. There are many people and organizations that need clothing or supplies and will be most grateful for whatever you have to give them. This act does a few things. It creates a vacuum and it also helps others. You couldn’t really give the Universe a more positive message. Be generous not only with your things but with your time, talent, money, gifts and even yourself and your inner feelings. Give, give, give.

As you’re able to do this cleaning and clearing, make sure you express your gratitude for being able to do this and for all the good you have in your life. Gratitude is a phenomenal power in moving the Universe to bring you what you’re asking for. Sing your thanks. Just as with affirmations, putting things to music is so much more powerful and will allow you to send wonderful vibrations to the Universe. In turn, the Universe will bring you your good.

I want to use this format to talk about this week’s Teleseminar “Clutter’s Last Stand”. It will be this Thursday, 23 March 2006 at 5 p.m. Pacific, 7 p.m. Central, and 8 p.m. Eastern. You can register any time you want before hand.

If you have a problem with clutter in your life, this is the teleseminar for you. If the area surrounding you is cluttered, your mind and spirit will also be cluttered. New thoughts, ideas, relationships, business opportunities, money and just about anything else will NOT be able to come into your life. That’s not something we want to experience, is it?

When I was in Virginia and found out that I had been given this job here in San Antonio (I had wanted to come back here for the past 20 years but had no idea how I was going to accomplish that), obviously I had to move. But to make matters “worse”, I bought a 1 story house here in San Antonio. I had a 3 level house in Virginia (two stories and a basement). I think you can begin to see why I feel I can speak here as a “clutter expert”.

My life had been cluttered at that time. I was fortunate that the Universe still decided I was needed in San Antonio. It’s amazing that that happened when you look at the clutter surrounding me.

I had two garage sales and made over $3000.00 in them (all of which went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital) and then I had furniture and office supplies and anything else you can imagine that was either thrown out or donated to people who needed it. I even had to rent a very large dumpster to put in my yard so that all the items could be discarded.

When I moved, my mind felt free and I ended up having so many ideas and opportunities come into my life. I was able to learn how to be a webmaster so that I could help Anne out when she needed someone to take over the website. I learned how to start a business, I was “thrown into the midst” of a person teaching how to do teleseminars. I was at the right place at the right time. Now, admittedly this has happened to me several times in the past but for the past few years I had felt stagnant. I wonder why.

Believe me, it works! Join Anne on Thursday to learn how to clear the clutter from your spirit!

See you then.
