How To Make Your Goals More Achievable…

Every year most of us make “resolutions” at New Years. It’s also possible that you get the urge at other times during the year to make new goals. Listing goals is only one small part of the process of attaining them. You have to be specific about each and every goal. You have to be careful not to “outline” and you have to own that goal. We’ll talk more about these segments here today.

Most people fail at sticking toward attaining their goals because they don’t really define what the goal is and then they lose hold of the dream because it’s not really a dream yet – it’s just a word or a group of words. You have to be very specific in defining your goal. After you take some time doing a free flow list of things you’d like, then pick out the ones you really want to work on. Have a separate page (or even two) for each item. Then take time – it may even be days – to list the specifics about this item. You cannot be too detailed. In fact you must go into great detail so that the Universe will bring you what you really want, not something that may or may not resemble it. To use a worse case example – if your goal is to ‘lose weight’, you may do that by contracting a bad disease or perhaps having financial problems so that you begin to starve. You actually want to lose the weight (or take the weight off if you don’t like the word ‘lose’) in a healthy manner. See what a difference that extra set of words made? If you say you want a new car, you have to specify the kind, color, type, interior features, exterior features, safety rating, gas mileage, new or used, etc. If you don’t go into all the details you may end up with a real clunker just because you said you wanted a new car. Remember that ‘new’ could simply mean new to you, not new as in not previously owned. Making this detailed list will help you pay attention to your words and what they mean which is vital to your every word and thought.

Once you’ve detailed what it is you want and you really have a goal, you’re much more likely to “own” it. You’ve spent time listing your desires and refining them and now it’s time to visualize it and make a movie with you in it. If it’s that you want another job with more pay, make a movie of your life with this new amount of pay and what you’re going to do with it. I love to watch myself surprising the people at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital with a gigantic check and dedicating a wing to my favorite person. Of course, in my movie there are more specifics than I listed here but they are my private details. But this movie is something that I play over and over and it has become a part of me. Make your movie a part of you – own it today as they say. It’s not good enough or powerful enough to just write it down and expect it to happen. Having this movie inside of you makes it your own and reminds you that you have an investment in that goal.

Most importantly you must not outline. So, what is outlining? It’s telling the Universe how to make your goal happen. For example, there was a woman who kept saying she needed $10,000 to have an operation to fix a medical issue. What she really needed was health, not money. Once she stopped telling the Universe she needed the money, guess what? A new doctor came to town and treated her with a medicine that hadn’t been tried before and she no longer needed the operation. If you say you want a new car, say that. Don’t say that you want $15,000 to buy a new car. Why? Because there are other ways you could receive a car. It could be a gift, you could win the lottery, you could receive it as a work bonus, a friend could ask you to ‘car sick’ for a year or more, you could receive a car in an inheritance, etc. See, the ways that this car could come to you are numerous. Spend your time telling the Universe what you want, NOT how to bring it to you.

These concepts about goal setting and achieving are a major step to changing your life. If you want to find out more about what practical techniques there are to help you alter the path of your life, you might consider checking out The Art of Making Things Happen.

How To Think Outside YOUR Box…

I imagine you’ve heard the phrase “think outside the box”. I am not really one to be excited about phrases such as this. But this phrase can really take on another meaning that I encourage you to adopt and use more than one time a day. It can be modified to help you remember the meaning and what you’re supposed to do. How does “Think outside your box” sound?

The idea for this modification came as I was walking with my dog and we passed a house that was watering the lawn in the middle of Stage 3 water restrictions. I began to wonder how important a lawn is compared to having water to drink. My mind then immediately ran to images of hurricane Katrina where people were desperate just to get a bottle of water and they guarded one bottle as if it were gold. And you know what? It was gold to them. They couldn’t survive without that bottle of water. The lesson from that one image is that “the box” is different for everyone. So when you tell someone to “think outside the box”, you need to figure out what their box is.

That’s one change to the phrase “think outside your box”. Remember that others may not be thinking on the same wavelength you are. You must define “the box”. If you’re a leader, whether it be a leader in business, in sports, or in your family, define the box before you instruct someone to think outside it.

But there’s another meaning to “think outside your box”. I want you to think about other people and what they need or what their circumstances are. Back to my initial thought about the water restrictions for a second. I wondered what the people in that house thought about when they turned on their sprinklers. Was it “I really want my lawn to look beautiful so that others will think well of me”? Or, “I paid big bucks to put that lawn in, I don’t want it to die because then I’ll have to shell out more money to replace it”? What about “Well, others do it so there’s no problem with my doing it”?

Do you think that just before they hit the sprinkler switch (which is probably automated but had to be changed when the stage of restriction was elevated) they said “maybe I don’t need to water my lawn, it would be better if I saved water today so that someone will have water to drink tomorrow”? Think about others with every move you make and every word you utter. What will the impact of your actions be on others? Many of us are taught, unfortunately, to think only about ourselves and what results our actions will have FOR us. This does not put out the really positive vibrations the Universe wants from us. If you think about our actions and words and the impact they will have on others, I guarantee your behavior will change. Using the water example again – do you let the water run while you brush your teeth? Do you know how much water is wasted when you do that? Estimates are 1 gallon of water. That’s a whole lot of water. What effort is required to turn the faucet off when you don’t need it? Will that help others? Maybe not today but maybe in a few weeks or months. It’s not all about instant gratification even though that’s what we’re after today.

Use “think outside your box” to remind you to practice gratitude every single day in every single way. When you do think outside your own box, you have to think of others and that, by itself will lead you to expressing gratitude for all that is surrounding you. The phrase will also remind you to “do” for others. If you’re outside your box, you have to think of others and what you can do for them. The more you give to others, the more you’ll receive from the Universe.

Remember to “practice what you wish to become”. This is a meaningful quote by Dr. Kunath.

How Your Life Is Like The Tour de France

The Tour de France is probably the most well known bicycle race in the world although there are many more. This is a race for only the most well conditioned riders. They have to prepare both physically and mentally for this 3 week long 2100 mile ride across France. But conditioning is only one part of the event. They have to create a vision and then a strategy to bring that vision to life. For some, the vision is just to finish the grueling race and for others it’s to win. Your life is very much like this race. Not only do you have to condition yourself and create a vision and a strategy but the race is like life. It’s long and takes stamina and courage to get through. It consists of 21 stages (days) with 2 rest days. There are easy days (the flat stages) where sprinters excel. And then there are the mountains (the Pyrenees and the Alps) where the sprinters have to work very hard to conquer but the climbers are in their prime. And then there are time trials – both team and individual time trials. Can you see how this parallels life? Let’s talk about this.

Your life is not a sprint. It’s a long race so you have to condition yourself for the long haul. Sprinters give everything they have in a short period of  time and then are spent after they finish. That may be what happens when we have a special event (a wedding, a work project, a vacation, etc), but we have to be ready to go through our entire life (the full 21 stages) and not be completely spent after a short race. The lesson here is to plan for the whole event (your life) by continuing to expand and revise your goals as you achieve each “stage” of your life. Each day, at the end of the day, is another time to review what’s happened that day (during that stage) and to plan for the next day’s ride through life.

Your life is filled with mountains but we call them challenges or obstacles. As with the Tour de France you can predict most of these and plan for them. How are you going to climb over the highest peaks in your life? Sprinters hate them, climbers love them – they go after them with enthusiasm and joy. Some of these climbs are almost completely vertical, hard to walk up to say nothing of racing a bicycle up them. You can’t just go out one day and think you’re going to make it up the highest pinnacle. You have to plan for everything that comes along. You create methods and plans for conquering the mountains that are in your life. That’s called being prepared. But it’s also about knowing what lies ahead and heading into it with strategy plus enthusiasm and excitement. You look forward to these challenges because you know that nothing can beat you.

There are time trials in your life too. The team time trials require everyone to work together in perfect harmony and synchronicity. This is how you deal with relationships in your life. This can be intimate relationships or those with friends or colleagues at work. Perhaps it’s a project you’re working on at work with a specific deadline. If everything is going well and you all get along and all your ideas are pooled together, you’ll win that time trial. Everyone complements the others. The same applies to the individual time trials. These are specific events in your life. Maybe it’s getting through a course to improve your knowledge and skill level so that your resume can be more complete. Maybe it’s writing a book. Whatever is your time trial, it has to be done by yourself (or with a team if it’s the team trial) and you’re judged by the speed with which you accomplish the task.

I’ve only touched on the various parts of the Tour but by now you can see what the parallels are. Your life is not a bike ride but you must condition yourself and plan for every obstacle that is possible. No Matter What Happens Declare It Good

People are prone to thinking the worst about things that happen unless they are perfect. We tend to look at flaws more than we look at the beauty that is mixed with the flaws. You can change your life and your emotional well-being simply by declaring everything that happens good. Let me show you.

No matter what happens simply say “I declare this good, I see the good coming out of it.” Keep saying this over and over and you will soon begin to believe it. Remember that you create your own life and situations. So, if you continue to condemn everything, you will simply get more of the bad stuff. No one really wants that but to respond negatively to things has become our way of life. Look at the News – how much good stuff do they report? Not much. They are simply into “blood and guts”.

Give yourself a little challenge with the news. It is usually best to not watch the news especially while you are training yourself to think and talk differently. But, this is fun to do if you discipline yourself for it. Watch the news one night (this is easier than reading the newspaper but you can use that too). Every “bad” or “doomsday” story they put out should be followed in your head with “That is not my truth. I declare this good and I definitely see the good coming out of it.” See how you feel after you’ve done this for the entire one-half hour or hour show that you’re watching. Your energy level will have soared instead of plummeting.

The Law of Supply and Demand works hand in hand with this technique because it will provide all the supply you need for any demand you have. Look what happened when we first started to experience problems with an oil shortage (or at least rapidly rising prices). The hybrid and electric cars were created. Someone looked at that situation and said “I declare it good” instead of sitting there going “oh no, what are we going to do?”. This has happened all throughout history in medicine and technology and any other field you investigate.

There was once a woman who had been married to a man for over 25 years and eventually found out that he had been cheating on her for the entire time. She was devastated naturally. But her faith got her through the situation and eventually she found the man of her dreams who took care of her in every way she ever wanted – much more than the one she had been married to. Of course, she could have lamented those 25 “wasted” years but that would have done absolutely no good since they can not be retrieved and the negative energy would crack the wonderful good happening in her life now.

Take your time and practice this. Keep at it. No matter what seems bad in your life simply say “I declare it good and I see the good coming out of it” and whenever it comes into your mind trying to bother you, repeat that phrase over and over again until you’re actually smiling. You’ll be amazed at your results.
