Your choices of action may be limited—but your choices of thought are not.

—Abraham

Excerpted from the workshop: Chicago, IL on May 25, 2002

Remember this short sentence this week! It’s so powerful. This is what has gotten many POWs through their long periods of captivity – knowing that they can think whatever they choose to think even if they are confined to a very small space.

I would bet that you’re not confined to that small a space right now. I would also bet that sometimes thoughts pop into your head and you just let them sit there and continue on even if they aren’t generating the nice feelings you would like to have right now. Remember that you can control and change those thoughts. Pull from your memory (your Kodak Moments) or create new memories – write your beautiful story in your head.

For example, two weeks before my Tennessee race I dragged my weary body out the door to do a run after doing back to back long runs 2 days prior. I didn’t want to be out there but I had to be. So, instead of thinking about how much I didn’t want to be there, I changed my thoughts to how great it was going to feel when I was doing the event since I had prepared so well. I immediately had more energy whereas I was just barely able to lift my feet a few minutes before. The power of your thoughts is phenomenal. The better part is that YOU can control them and you are the King or Queen of your own thoughts.

So, now what are you going to do about this. Even if things seem down and out externally, you can still feel good and think other thoughts that make you feel better. Once you start to feel better, your vibration raises and your momentum starts going in the direction you want it to. Then, lo and behold, you will be much more capable of finding solutions rather than focusing on problems.

This week just remember that YOU ARE IN CONTROL! Stop yourself then restart yourself. Put the thoughts you want into your head. Try it for this week and see where it gets you. Let us know in the comment box.

That’s truer than you realize even though it seems very simplistic and “cute”.

This week try catching yourself whenever you start to worry. Pull up one of your “Kodak Moments” we’ve been creating (or recalling) over the past several months. Stop that worry in its tracks. But, since sometimes people have difficulty letting go of things, remind yourself that you’re just doing this for “today” or “this week” if you’re brave. Remember it’s one step at a time. Take this the same way.

But look at what this picture is telling you – why would you want to destroy any possible happiness you can be having today by worrying about something that might not happen. It most likely WILL happen though, if you continue to focus on it (that’s the Law of Attraction working quite well in your life even if you don’t believe it is).

So, by not worrying today you accomplish at least two things. You divert your emotions/vibrations from the “lack” that you were going to worry about and possibly prevent it from coming. You also ruin your vibrations for right now and get your momentum started in the wrong direction. By the time you’re realizing it, your car will be at the bottom of the hill and the momentum will NOT be able to be stopped. Try stopping it at the top of the hill. Then you can change the direction of your momentum easily. That’s what we’re aiming for when we want you to stop worrying about tomorrow as soon as you recognize that’s what you’re doing.

Try it, you’ll like it. Let us know how it’s going or ask questions about the best way to do this.

I have had to really practice what I preach last week. And it was not easy. The Friday before my momentum had plummeted downward because I let something at work affect me. I should have just accepted it and moved on but I chose the harder way. Perhaps I made that choice so I could see how out of sorts it made me feel – so I could value positive momentum more. I don’t know why I chose that path but it pretty much continued the whole week and I was NOT on a high-flying disc.

So, yesterday while on a miserable 20 mile run (things just didn’t feel right from the moment I opened the door and saw the rain), I made up my mind that I had let that momentum run out and that I was going to start on a new path this week. I started on the run and began to look at things that were along the way and notice how beautiful they were and what they represented (nature, invention, progress, love, convenience, etc). I kept repeating one of my mantras – I control my mood. That is such a great thought – there really is something I can control (and you can too). Look at the Prisoners of War who survived years of captivity and torture. It was all about their attitude and mood.

I am happy to be here and be able to do the things I want to do and I know I’m very blessed. Who knows what the next moment will bring. I am making every attempt to “live in the moment”, to live in the “now” as much as I can. That has become so important to me. It’s no longer all about the ultimate outcome, but about the journey. I’ve always “known” that intellectually but now I realize it is the way to live. Enjoy everything that happens (even the bad momentum happenings).

I know I’ve been on this kick for awhile but the last 7 months of my life have brought it to the forefront of my life and I want to live every moment in joy. Even on “miserable” training runs. I can count my blessings and know what those blessings have given me.

Join me in this new adventure. Don’t shoot for the moon but enjoy feeling whatever and wherever you are right this minute.

Every month for the past 10 years I’ve had a pest service. San Antonio is one buggy place and bugs are NOT my favorite living beings.

I’ve had the pleasure of having three different guys service my property over this period of time. The first guy was very knowledgeable but unbelievably negative. I got to the point where I dreaded the day the pest man came to my house every month. Even when I tried to avoid discussing anything with him, he would follow me around telling me his troubles and woes. I even did something I don’t normally do. I gave him one of my “As a Man Thinketh” books and talked to him about it. It was like talking to my Siberian Husky though. She was as stubborn as this man was.

Finally after about 7 or 8 years he left the company and went to another job. At that point I got to know one of the sons of the manager. Nick was such a joy and was always happy and pleasant and full of life and joy, no matter what happened. It was terrific and I looked forward to his visit every month. But, Nick wanted to serve so he joined the Army about 7 months ago.

Next on the list was his older brother Andrew, another charming reflection of his dad. Nick, Andrew and their dad are wonderful people and always joyful no matter what else might be going on in their lives. I am honored to know them.

Today Nick graduated from his school in the Army and will be going to Ft Hood (near home). Andrew was more talkative than ever and it was such a refreshing experience chatting with him. He told me how he always meant to serve the people whose houses he visited. That he looked on his job as one that was to make folks feel good, not for him to make a million dollars. He talked about all the things he had taught his little brother, Nick and had tried to show him what was important in life to look at. As he talked, I noticed that he kept referring to what people “do” or what they “are”, never about what they “had”. That is the mark of a true human being – even at his young age, he recognized that the important thing in life is what’s inside a person and what you reflect outwards to try to help other people, NOT what you achieve.

Even though he didn’t know it, he was emanating an extremely high vibration and was on those high flying discs (his momentum was phenomenal and as he talked, you could actually see the 68 second rule in action – even without him knowing it). He smiled, was animated and kept talking about the good he could do other people just by being friendly and looking to extract the good about any circumstance that you run into. We then talked about Russell H. Conwell’s “Acres of Diamonds” – a man was very happy and content with what he had until he learned of the existence of something called a diamond. At that point, the man became despondent and felt poor – although nothing had actually changed in his life. He wanted to be “rich” by finding diamonds. So he left his home and his family in search of richness (diamonds), only to never find any and subsequently ended his life. The man who took over his property was digging in the ground one day and found a diamond – right under his nose. This turned out to be the most proliferative diamond mind ever. Riches were right under this other man’s nose – right there for him to look at. Don’t look elsewhere. Find the gold and riches in your life as it is right now.

One way you do that is by giving out what you wish to receive. But don’t give out joy and pleasure “just so” you can get it back. You have to blossom with happiness, goodness and joy for the sake of those qualities and what they will do for another person. If you make it your goal to serve others and treat them well, you will have it made in life. Think about just saying hi to someone, just smiling, just waving to people even if you don’t know them. You never know what’s going on in someone’s life that you might be helping them. You might even save them from ending their life if they realize that there are people out there that care. Can you imagine how wonderful that would be?

Make your vibration and your momentum be a boomerang. Send forth goodness and it will definitely return to you.

What good thing, no matter how small, can you do today? Tell us about it in the comment box below. What gold is in your life that is covered up? What can you find in your own backyard? Look where you are and love where you are!

If you need anything, just let us know, too.

“What separates people that get what they want out of life from those people who do not get what they want out of life is their response to challenges.”
Dr. Steven G. Jones

Although I don’t believe this is the only thing that separates these two groups of people, it’s an extremely important point.

Think about yourself and how you respond to a challenge. Do you crawl up in a ball and want to die? Sometimes that’s ok initially. What’s not productive is when that behavior or thought process continues on and on and on. Do you get mad and decide that this is not going to beat you? That you’ll find a way to conquer the challenge, to climb up and over whatever obstacle is in your way? That is the way of the warrior, the person who excels at life.

Remember that there are two different vibrations at play when you are confronted with a problem. There is the vibration of the problem and if you continue to think about the “problem”, you will stay on that lower vibration and not move anywhere – you are focusing on the problem so that is what you’ll get more of. Maybe the problem won’t get worse but it won’t get any better either when your vibration remains on the problem.

You have to raise your vibration to the level of the solution – a much higher vibration. Instead of thinking about and focusing on the problem, concentrate on the solution. Tell the Universe you are ready to receive the answer and you know that it’s out there waiting to be delivered to you.

Think back to your past and think about when you’ve discovered a solution to something – what have you felt like when you’ve been in the process? Maybe take a look at a time at work when a problem has been identified. Everyone might respond with “oh nuts, what do we do now?” But then you all got your heads together and brainstormed until you figured it out. What kind of elation did you all feel? Use that as “Kodak Moment” to elevate your vibration when you’re after a solution to your current problem.

I don’t even use the word problem once I’ve identified what it is. I think about how great it’s going to be when I come up with the solution to x, y, z – describing the situation if I must. Or preferably I use something that’s brief but objectively describes the situation. Then I go right back to looking for the solutions – opening my heart and mind to the Universe to deliver the answer to me. I use some of the processes we’ve talked about – the 68 second process, rampage of appreciation and even the “wouldn’t it be nice if….”. If you’re skeptical or it’s the first time, you can use “I’m in the process of….”

Next time you come across a challenge, immediately switch to the solution seeking mode and your vibration will automatically elevate with you! Try it, you’ll like it. Don’t dwell on the problem. Move out and move up!

Terrie

With summer coming (or finally here for some) let’s enjoy it and not start complaining about how hot and humid it is for another few months or so, ok?

Sorry, couldn’t help that because we’ve had such a long winter and people have been complaining (including me) about how cold it is and how long and drawn out the winter has been.

But we humans frequently have a very short memory and after it’s been hot for a few weeks (or days in some instances), we forget that it wasn’t very long ago that we were wearing 10 layers of clothing to keep warm and building muscles shoveling snow.

Unfortunately, our short memory extends to other aspects of our life. We tend to forget how great things have been and focus only on what’s going “wrong”. It’s really our responsibility to find those “Kodak Moments” and burn them into our memory for future use.

When you wake up in the morning before you get out of bed, find something satisfying and enjoyable to think about so that you can develop your momentum on a high plane (a high flying disc as Abraham would say). Think about your pillow, about your bed, about how comfortable and special you feel just lying there in bed. Don’t reach too deeply. Don’t even reach for someone next to you because that’s liable to remind you of something that happened yesterday that could bring your momentum down.

Sleep halts your momentum. It quiets your mind just as meditation does. That’s what you want in order to start up momentum the way you want it. You want to start over in a sense. Since your mind has been quieted and the momentum engine has been shut down, you can put the key in the ignition and start a new, beautiful and satisfying momentum up in the morning. When you get out of bed see how long that high flying momentum lasts. Initially it might not be very long at all. But if you keep practicing this every morning, after a few weeks or a month or so, you’ll be amazed at how it carries you through the day.

Try it tomorrow when you first wake up.

Tell us in the comment box what it is you’re using for your momentum builder – your pillow, your bed, what?

Although this could be considered to be about stopping procrastination, that’s not my intent today.

I know that I often will spin my wheels and not be procrastinating. In fact, I’m working very hard when I’m spinning my wheels. But the problem is that I’m trying this and trying that and can’t seem to make up my mind which direction I want to follow. Can’t figure out which is the “right” direction. So, I end up spending a lot of time and energy not really accomplishing anything and then even more time and energy worrying about spinning my wheels and not knowing what to do…..Catch 22 for sure.

The most recent example I can think of was when I was trying to figure out what book to start with. I had two ideas and I would go back and forth between each of them. I’d try to figure out the pro’s and con’s of each and whether this would “sell” or be “useful” or would the other be more so. You can probably imagine the paralysis I was inflicting on myself. Like a backyard swing – back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. And I didn’t get anywhere at all. It was frustrating as well as non-productive.

So one day after doing EFT and some meditation to quiet my mind, I decided to just write and not worry about what book it would go in. That let everything loose and I accomplished so much just by listening to my inner being. I still have another decision to make once I’ve gotten to a stopping place but those decisions can wait.

I have a few favorite sayings and one of them is that “Everything is always working out for me!” I even have that on a timer on my phone. At certain times during the day, the phone beeps and the saying pops up. What a great reminder for me that as long as I follow my gut, my inner source, everything WILL work out for me. What I had been trying to do was “control” the situation. I was focusing on BOTH what I wanted and what I didn’t want. I wanted the book to be successful. Of course, that’s kind of hard to achieve if you haven’t written it yet – duh. But, at the same time I was also focusing on what I didn’t want. How? By trying to do a pro AND con list. Every time I thought about a con, I was actually concentrating on the things I didn’t want. You can never get to the solution while you’re in the “problem” mode. The vibrations and feelings you have when you think about problems are totally different than when thinking about solutions and they do NOT mix. I was focusing on the problem and not allowing the solution to come to me until I quieted my mind. That enabled my mind to open up so the solution could come in.

Thus, one primary lesson I learned from this and which has subsequently been reinforced by Abraham is that I will not be making any pro and con lists any more. If I have to make any lists, it will definitely be the pro side. Then if I run across what I think is a problem, I will simply open my mind and not question what comes to it. That’s something else that we tend to do – question our inner source. When we do that, it’s a way of defeating what we might actually be trying to achieve. It’s a great way to sabotage any project or ourselves.

Go with your gut. That’s something I have always embraced in my medical career. Even if I could not make a firm diagnosis in the Emergency Department, I knew when someone was really sick and needed to be admitted. I also had a 95% diagnostic rate for assessing what was wrong with someone as they were escorted past the nurses’ station to a bed. But you know what? That is not any great diagnostic acumen I possessed. It was me allowing (opening) the conduit of the Universe to flow through me. If I tried to impose my thoughts and ideas on a situation, I’d never have gotten anywhere. Since I considered myself a conduit, I knew I could do the right thing for the patients even if I couldn’t put the right name on it. It’s all about control.

We humans want to control so much. That gets in our way because then we are so invested in the outcome and that becomes more important than actually doing the “thing”. Get rid of control. The Universe is coming to and through you and will guide you to the correct course of action in every single situation.

You’ll be so amazed when you stop spinning your wheels and get started in the right direction. How will you know it’s the right direction? It will “feel” right – it will be in your gut, or your soul or wherever you feel things. Go with it.

Quiet your mind

Throw away the “con” list and concentrate on the “pro” list

If you find a “problem”, simply repeat “Everything always works out for me” as many times as you need to quiet your mind and open it up to let the solution in.

Accept the solution when you feel it. Go with your gut.

Once you feel calm, you will be inspired and you will know the course of action to take.

Take action on what you feel.

Keep going in that direction. Forget about control. There is no need for control. You’re going to accomplish great things just by following your inspiration.

You’ve got it made now.

I know you will feel so much lighter and happier. Let me know by commenting below.

I find it intriguing that we have all these “days” and “weeks” and even “months” that memorialize or remember something. We have a “week for this” and a “week for that” or a “month for a disease”.

In some respects that’s good but in other ways we end up paying too much attention to the thing we’re trying to eradicate or “cure”. By focusing on something, we are sure to get more of it. Is that what we want? Do we want more colon cancer, more ALS, more diabetes, etc? I realize that this is blasphemy and I’m not advocating elimination of these events. However, if we could find a way to emphasize the positive, the health and well-being instead of the disease it would be so much more effective.

When we celebrate Memorial Day we do it well. We remember the lives of heroes and do profess that all those who have served in the military are heroes. This is a good thing. We want more heroes. We don’t bemoan how they died, what tragic circumstances they experienced, how bad they had it, etc. We talk about the good qualities of a hero, of a courageous person who so selflessly gave their all for their country. The more we focus on the courage and selflessness, the more we’ll draw that into our lives – either in ourselves or by drawing people into our life who have these characteristics.

Try this today for a change. Celebrate someone in your life who has exhibited tremendous courage in some way. Does someone you know have to work two jobs (or more?) and takes care of their family at the same time? Is someone striving courageously to combat a disease and the medicine to treat that disease? It doesn’t have to be something big even. For example, I saw multiple examples of selflessness and courage during my recent 3 day run. “Oh that’s too trivial and not important in real life” you may be thinking. But, that’s not true. The persistence, love for others and dedication that you see as they are running day and night for 3 days is simply a snapshot of what their entire life is like. So what you see on a run, is most likely what you get every single day. Celebrate and honor these folks today.

Make a list of people that are influential in your life somehow. This could be your boss, your coworkers, friends, family, others with whom you associate.

Write down the characteristics you see that you really respect. Consider even those you wish you had more of.

Take a few minutes to sit quietly and send them positive love and energy to help them in whatever way they might need. Even if you don’t think they need anything specific, everyone can always use an energy boost.

Focus on their qualities. Run a movie in your mind about what you’ve seen and what you love about them.

Thank the Universe for bringing these people into your life because your life will never be the same again.

Now enjoy the BBQ!

Take a moment to tell us what you’ve learned doing this simple exercise.

There’s always something in our lives that we can appreciate. Even if everything doesn’t seem like it’s going great right now, you can help change that momentum by focusing on appreciating what’s around you – or appreciating things that have happened in the past.

The idea is to build a momentum that you want by noticing the things around you that you are happy with and want to show the Universe that you’re so happy they are or were in your life.

One of Abraham’s processes is the Rampage of Appreciation. This is a great technique you can use at any time and no matter what your situation is at the time.

Even if you’re in the doctor’s office, waiting and not knowing what’s going on, you can find something in the immediate area to start doing your rampage with. If you just can’t dig up some current items, you can go into the past or even more fun and productive is to go into the future. Start saying that you are so appreciative that you have a great doctor, you have access to medical care, that you came in to get seen when you did and the doctor and the staff is going to take care of you no matter what. You’re appreciative of the modern office and even if it’s cold for you inside, you can be appreciative that it’s not hot and humid inside. Let’s say you’re embarrassed and cold because they put you in one of those flimsy paper gowns and you’re shivering. Start being appreciative that you’re not in Siberia or Alaska and that there is no wind. Be appreciative of the fact that you can feel the cold and you recognize that it’s cold. That means you have the mental capacity you want to have. Be appreciative of the clean room and the computers if there are computers in the office. Be appreciative that your doctor is on the cutting edge of medicine and knows exactly what’s going on with you and will fix you right up. Be appreciative that you have insurance. And on and on.

If you’re stuck in traffic, be appreciative of the technology that goes into traffic lights, be appreciative that you live in a city that has grown so much that there is traffic, appreciate the growth this represents, appreciate the music on your radio or the CD you’re playing, be appreciative of the other cars around you that are beautiful and you can see them better when you’re stuck in traffic because they are not moving and you can see them.

If you’re at work and busy, be appreciative of the fact that you have a job, that you don’t have to travel as far as some to get to work, that you’re getting paid, that you work with great people, that your both is understanding and kind and gentle (and if he or she is not, then be appreciative that he/she knows how to delegate), be appreciative of the benefits you have with the job, of the hours you work, etc.

Every time you praise something, every time you appreciate something, every time you feel good about something, you are telling the Universe, “More of this, please. More of this, please.” You need never again make another verbal statement of this intent, and if you were allowing your cork to float — all good things would flow to you.

—Abraham

Excerpted from the workshop: Silver Spring, MD on April 19, 1997

Get the gist? See if you can do at least one rampage of appreciation every day this week. When you do them, see what it does to your vibration and how you feel. Let us know. Write it in your journal too.

And it was a Monday too. What an enlightening experience. I wrote about this in the Weekend Wrap-Up last week or the week before but wanted to get it down here since I felt it was such an important experience – especially when we’re talking about momentum and vibrations. This woman is a perfect example of living in the NOW and knowing that feeling good is what brings joy in life despite the circumstances.

It was early Monday a.m. and I had to drop something off at a lab and have some blood drawn.

The technician had taken care of me twice before and I had previously been impressed with her friendly yet professional demeanor so I was happy to see her behind the desk.

As she was checking me in she told me that when she had gotten into her car that morning she saw that her car had been broken into and her radio had been stolen. And it was pretty obvious the people who stole it weren’t professionals because they cut a big box section out of the dashboard.

Take a minute and envision this for yourself and see yourself in her place. How would you react? What would you do, think, feel or say? If you’re anything like me, it won’t be the same type of reaction that she had.

She told me that she was happy she still had made it to work on time and that it was funny because she had told the car folks when she bought the car to put in a “low end” radio and now she was really glad she had said that because she wasn’t out as much money.

She also said that she was happy they had only stolen the radio and not the car because she couldn’t afford a new car now.

Then she said her three boys would have fun repairing the dash and putting in another radio.

All the while she was telling me this she was animated and positive, not trying to elicit sympathy at all. Just relaying the story and how she was happy about her reaction and the irony of it all.

“Wow” was about all I could say and think. I was totally amazed at her attitude. Here was a woman who didn’t make a lot of money, had three kids and yet was so upbeat I couldn’t believe it despite the costly event that had occurred in her life. Her vibrations were way, way up there and would continue to positively affect anyone she came in contact with that day.

I know it sure made a difference in my day and the way I looked at everything and felt about things that day. She was telling her story in a way that would benefit so many other people because her vibrations couldn’t help but be up there too.

Can you do that with something that has happened in your life? Try it. Smile and look for the good in every event. As Catherine Ponder used to proclaim (no matter what) – “I declare it good”!

Life is good no matter what’s going on around us. Let’s try to remember something that’s happened to us that felt great and focus on that whenever external things seem to be trying to take hold of our feelings. Focusing on that good thing will prevent that external thing from overcoming us and lowering our vibrations. Remember the two phrases I keep repeating:

I declare it good!

Nothing and nobody can interfere with my prosperity, well-being, and peace of mind – not even myself!

Enjoy your week. I know I will.
